Key Facts
What's a Conviction?
Imagine a game where someone is accused of breaking a rule. A conviction is like the final decision in a big, serious game played in a courtroom. It means a judge or a jury has decided that a person is guilty of doing something wrong, like breaking a law. It's a very important decision that tells everyone what happened.
When Does This Happen?
A conviction can happen in a few ways. Sometimes, the person accused says, 'Yes, I did it!' and the court accepts that. Other times, there's a big trial, like a play with lots of talking. A jury, which is a group of people, listens carefully and then decides if the person is guilty. If they decide 'yes,' that's a conviction!
What If They Aren't Guilty?
If the court decides someone did NOT break the rule, it's called an acquittal. It's like being told 'You're free to go!' In some places, there's another special decision called 'not proven,' which also means the person is not found guilty. It's important that everyone gets a fair chance to show they are innocent.
What Happens Next?
After a conviction, the court has to decide what happens next. This is called a sentence, and it's like a consequence for breaking the rule. A conviction can also change things for a person later on, like making it harder to get a job or travel to some countries. It's a serious outcome.
