Jacob Riis Park

Jacob Riis Park is a super cool place right on the edge of the big Atlantic Ocean. It's like a giant sandy playground in Queens, New York City. The park has a huge beach where you can build sandcastles and splash in the waves. It's also near a giant bridge called the Marine Parkway Bridge, which is so tall it's like a skyscraper for cars!

This park wasn't always called Jacob Riis Park. A long, long time ago, it was called Seaside Park. Then, it was renamed for a man named Jacob Riis who wanted everyone to have nice places to play. During a big war, airplanes even used this park! Later, cool buildings with fancy shapes called Art Deco were built, like a big changing house for swimmers.

Besides the amazing beach, Jacob Riis Park has lots of other fun stuff. There's a long path called a boardwalk where you can walk and feel the ocean breeze. You can also play sports on grassy fields or even try to hit a golf ball on a special golf course. It's a place where families can have a great time together all day long.

Jacob Riis was a very important person who wrote stories and took pictures to show people what life was like for poor families in the city. He wanted to make things better for them. Because he cared so much about making nice places for people, this beautiful park was named after him. He helped make sure places like this park could be built for everyone to enjoy.
