Gateway National Recreation Area

Imagine a park so big it's like having many playgrounds all in one! Gateway National Recreation Area is a huge park that sits right next to busy cities in New York and New Jersey. It's so large, it's bigger than 30,000 football fields!

Even though it's near lots of buildings, it has sandy beaches for swimming, trails for walking and biking, and even places to camp under the stars. It's a special place where nature meets the city.

This amazing park wasn't always here! A long, long time ago, the land and water were just as they are now. But in 1972, smart people in the government decided to make it a special park.

They wanted to make sure everyone could enjoy the ocean, the birds, and the fun activities. They wanted to protect this special spot so it wouldn't get built up with more houses and stores. It's like they decided to save a giant sandbox for everyone to play in!

Lots and lots of people love Gateway National Recreation Area! In just one year, more than 8 million people visited. That's more people than live in some whole countries!

They come to splash in the ocean waves, watch colorful birds fly by, go boating on the water, or just enjoy a picnic. It's a popular spot because it’s easy to get to, even though it feels like a wild escape from the city hustle and bustle.

Gateway is super special because it's one of the last bits of the original shoreline. This means it's a home for many animals, especially birds! You can see all sorts of feathered friends here. It's also a place where the land is always changing because of the ocean and the wind. It's a living, breathing park that shows us how nature can be strong and beautiful, even close to big cities.
