Giovanni da Verrazzano

Giovanni da Verrazzano was a super-duper explorer who lived a long, long time ago, way back in 1491! He was from a place called Florence, which is in Italy. Think of him like a brave captain on a big ship, sailing across the giant ocean. He wasn't just exploring for fun; he was working for the King of France! His job was to discover new places and see what was out there.

Giovanni's most famous trip was in 1524. He sailed his ship all the way across the Atlantic Ocean to North America. He was the very first European person to explore the coastline from a place called Florida all the way up to a place called New Brunswick. That's like sailing the entire length of a giant playground! He even sailed into big bays, like New York Bay and Narragansett Bay.

Giovanni's journey was super important because he was the first to map out a huge part of the North American coast for Europeans. Before him, nobody in Europe knew what this land looked like. He told people about the amazing bays and coastlines he saw. This helped other explorers and people who wanted to come to America later on. He was like the first tour guide for a whole new continent!
