Key Facts
Where the Land Says Hello to the Sea!
Coasts are like the world's wavy border between land and water. They can be sandy beaches where you build sandcastles, or rocky cliffs where seagulls perch. The shape of a coast depends on what the land is made of and how the waves crash against it.
Sometimes, the land is soft and sandy, and the waves can move it around easily. Other times, the land is hard rock, and the waves have a tougher time changing it. The Earth has a super long coastline, about 620,000 kilometers!
That's like circling the Earth 15 times!
Nature's Awesome Playground!
Coasts are buzzing with life! Tiny creatures like mussels and starfish cling to rocks, while seaweed sways in the water. In calmer spots, you might find special underwater gardens called seagrasses, which are like nurseries for baby fish and crabs. Birds love coasts too, finding yummy snacks in the wetlands. Some coasts even have colorful coral reefs, like underwater cities, full of amazing fish!
People Love the Coast Too!
Lots and lots of people live near the coast, almost half of everyone on Earth! They build big cities and busy ports there. People catch fish to eat and sell, which is a very important job. Beaches are also fun places for vacations, bringing in lots of visitors. The coast helps protect people from big waves and even tsunamis, like a natural shield.
A Changing, Winding Line!
The edge of the land and sea is always moving and changing. Waves can wash away sand or push new sand onto the shore. Because of this, it's tricky to measure the exact length of a coastline! Sometimes, the land near the coast can get too much salty water, which isn't good for plants. We need to take care of these special places so they stay healthy for everyone.
