Lower New York Bay

Key Facts
Meet the Big Blue Water!
Imagine a super-duper big puddle where lots of water from rivers like the Hudson River comes to play before it goes into the giant Atlantic Ocean. That's New York Bay! It's a special place where fresh river water mixes with salty ocean water, making it a bit of both.
It's located between two sandy spots called Sandy Hook and Rockaway Point. Lots of boats, big and small, travel on this water every single day.
A Busy Waterway for Boats!
New York Bay is like a superhighway for ships! Big cargo ships carrying toys and snacks from far away, and even ferries that take people across the water, all use this bay. It's part of a bigger system called the New York-New Jersey Harbor Estuary. This means it's connected to many other waterways, making it a very important spot for travel and for bringing things to and from the cities nearby.
Where Rivers Say Hello to the Ocean
Think of the Hudson River as a long, winding road, and the Raritan River and Arthur Kill are like other roads. All these 'water roads' end their journey in New York Bay! They bring water from far inland, and then it all flows out into the huge Atlantic Ocean. This mixing of water is super important for all the fish and other sea creatures that live there.
A Home for Water Friends
Even though it's near busy cities, New York Bay is a home for many amazing sea animals. Fish swim in its waters, and birds fly overhead. The mix of fresh and salty water creates a special home for them. It's a place where nature and the busy city life happen right next to each other, showing how important water is for everyone, including us!
