Fjord

Long, long ago, when the world was much colder, giant rivers of ice called glaciers were like enormous bulldozers! They slowly scraped and dug deep into the land. When the ice melted and the sea came in, these deep valleys filled up with salty water, creating a fjord!

They are usually found in places that were very cold a long time ago, like Norway or Alaska. Think of them as long, skinny arms of the ocean reaching far inland.

Fjords are super dramatic! They often have very steep, rocky sides that go straight up from the water, like tall cliffs. The water inside is usually very deep, much deeper than a swimming pool, and can be as deep as a 30-story building!

Sometimes, waterfalls tumble down these cliffs right into the fjord. The water is salty because it's connected to the ocean, and the air around them is often cool and misty.

Even though fjords can look a bit wild, people have lived near them for thousands of years! They are great places for boats to travel and for catching fish. Many animals also love fjords.

You might see seals popping their heads out of the water, or seabirds flying overhead. In the deeper parts, there are lots of fish, and sometimes even whales visit! The cool, clean water is perfect for many sea creatures.

Fjords are not just pretty; they are important! They give homes to lots of animals and fish. People use them for traveling by boat, fishing, and even for fun things like kayaking. The amazing views make them popular places for tourists to visit and take pictures. Fjords show us the incredible power of nature, especially how ice can shape the land over a very, very long time.
