Who Was This Leader?

Erich Honecker was born a long, long time ago, in 1912. He became the top leader of a country called East Germany in 1971. He stayed in charge for many years, until just before a very famous wall, the Berlin Wall, came down in 1989. He was like the principal of a giant school, making the big decisions for everyone in East Germany.

A Big Job and a Big Wall!

Before he was the main leader, Erich Honecker helped build the Berlin Wall. This wall was super tall and split a city in half, keeping people from going from East Germany to West Germany. He was in charge of making sure the rules were followed, and sadly, that meant people weren't allowed to cross the wall easily. It was a very serious job.

Making Things Better (and Worse)

When Erich Honecker was in charge, he tried to make life better for people by having more shops with fun things to buy. He also made friends with West Germany, which was a big deal! But he also kept a very close eye on everyone, and it was hard for people to speak their minds freely. He didn't like it when other countries changed their rules to be more free.

The End of His Time

As more people wanted to be free, the leaders of East Germany knew things had to change. In 1989, Erich Honecker had to step down from his job. Not long after, the Berlin Wall fell, and East and West Germany became one country again. He later went to live in Chile and passed away in 1994.
