Fun Fact
This party was so powerful it was the only one allowed to rule East Germany!

Where Was This Party?

This special party, called the SED, was the bossy leader of a country called East Germany. East Germany was like a big playground in the middle of Europe, with forests and rivers. It was a place with cold winters and warm summers, where people lived and worked. The SED was in charge of everything that happened there for a long, long time, from when kids were born until they grew up!

How Did the Party Start?

A long time ago, in 1946, two big groups of grown-ups who wanted to change the world decided to join forces. It was like two different teams in a game deciding to play together as one super-team! They called themselves the Socialist Unity Party of Germany.

They wanted everyone to share things and work together, like sharing toys on the playground. This party then helped start a new country called East Germany a few years later.

What Did the Party Do?

The SED party was like the principal of a giant school, making all the rules for East Germany. They decided how everyone would work, like in factories or on farms. They also made sure everyone went to school and got healthcare.

They believed everyone should learn about their ideas, so they taught everyone their special way of thinking, and even made sure kids learned Russian, the language of a big neighboring country!

When Did the Party's Rule End?

For many years, the SED party was in charge, but people started to want different things. In 1989, there was a big change, like when everyone on the playground decides to play a new game. People peacefully asked for new leaders and new rules.

The SED party changed its name and its ideas, and East Germany became part of a bigger, reunited Germany. It was a huge moment, like the end of a very long game!
