Where is This Icy Place?

Imagine a giant, chilly bathtub way up north! The East Siberian Sea is a big part of the Arctic Ocean. It's like a watery border between the land of Siberia and the icy Arctic.

To its west is another sea called the Laptev Sea, and to its east is the Chukchi Sea. It's a very cold place, and in the summer, the ice only melts away for a short time, usually in August and September. It's mostly not very deep, like a shallow puddle in some spots!

What's it Like There?

Brrr! It's super cold here most of the year. The water isn't very salty, and there aren't many plants or animals living there compared to warmer places.

It's often foggy, especially when it's summer. The sea is covered in big chunks of ice that float around, like giant ice cubes. The waves don't move very fast, and the tides, which are the up and down of the sea level, are super small, less than the height of your hand!

Who Lives Near the Icy Water?

Even though it's cold, people have lived near the East Siberian Sea for thousands of years! Long ago, tribes like the Yukaghirs and Chukchi called this place home. They were great at fishing, hunting animals, and raising reindeer.

Later, other groups like the Evens and Evenks lived there too. Eventually, they became part of bigger groups called the Yakuts and then the Russians. It's amazing how people can live in such a tough, icy environment!

What Do People Do There?

Because it's so cold and icy, not many people live here. The biggest town is called Pevek, and it's the most northern city in all of mainland Russia! People who live here often work in jobs like mining for important stuff from the ground.

They also use the sea for ships to travel on, which is called the Northern Sea Route. Fishing isn't a big job here because there aren't many fish. It's a wild and remote place!
