Chukchi Sea

Key Facts
Where is This Icy Place?
Imagine a giant, cold bathtub way up north! That's kind of like the Chukchi Sea. It's part of the even bigger Arctic Ocean.
On one side, it has a strait called Long Strait, near an island named Wrangel. On the other side, it stretches all the way to a place called Point Barrow in Alaska. The Bering Strait is its southern edge, connecting it to warmer seas.
It's a very big place, but not as big as some oceans!
A Chilly Home for Animals
Brrr! The Chukchi Sea is very cold, and it's often covered in ice. This icy water is home to amazing animals like polar bears, who love to walk on the ice, and big whales that swim through the chilly waters. Sometimes, seals pop their heads up to say hello! The water is so cold, it's like a giant freezer, keeping the fish and other sea creatures safe.
Tiny Town, Big Ocean
The biggest town you'll find right on the edge of the Chukchi Sea is called Uelen. It's in Russia, and it's a very small place compared to big cities. Imagine a town that's much smaller than your school! Even though the town is small, the sea is HUGE! It's so big that the International Date Line, which tells us what day it is, has to bend around it!
What's Under the Ice?
Even though it looks like just ice and water, the Chukchi Sea is super important. It's like a highway for animals moving between different parts of the Arctic. It also connects to other oceans, which helps move water all around the world. Scientists are very interested in this sea because it's changing as the Earth gets warmer. It's a special place that helps keep our planet healthy.
