A River That's a Border!

The Detroit River is like a watery line between two countries: the United States and Canada! It flows from a big lake called Lake St. Clair all the way to another giant lake, Lake Erie. It's about as long as 44 soccer fields put end-to-end. This river is super important because it helps connect even bigger lakes, like a watery highway for boats!

Boats, Bridges, and Tunnels!

Guess what? The Detroit River is one of the busiest places for boats in the whole world! Big ships carrying all sorts of things zoom up and down it. To get between the cities of Detroit, Michigan, and Windsor, Ontario, people can drive over the super-long Ambassador Bridge or even zoom under the river in a special tunnel! It's like a secret underwater road!

A River That Got Better!

A long, long time ago, when lots of factories were being built, the Detroit River got very, very dirty. It was so polluted that it was bad for the fish and animals. But guess what? People worked really hard to clean it up! Now, it's a much healthier place for nature, and there are even islands in the river where animals can live safely.

Fun on the River!

Today, the Detroit River is a fun place for people too! You can visit parks along its edge, like William G. Milliken State Park. There are also special places called wildlife refuges where animals are protected. It's so special that it's recognized as a heritage river by both the United States and Canada – the only river with that cool double title!
