The Case of Mahmoud Khalil

Mahmoud Khalil was a student at a big university called Columbia. He was also a leader in protests, like when people wanted to talk about what was happening in a place called Gaza. He was like a student superhero, trying to get people to listen to important ideas. But one day, something surprising happened to him!

One day, special agents came to Mahmoud's apartment. They didn't have a paper called a warrant, which is usually needed to enter someone's home. They said they were taking him away because of his student visa. It was like getting a surprise detention, but much bigger and scarier. He was then sent far away to a place called Jena, Louisiana.

Mahmoud was involved in protests about the Gaza war. Some grown-ups in the government didn't like these protests. They thought people like Mahmoud were causing problems for the country's friendships with other countries. It's like if your teacher thought you were causing trouble by talking too much, even if you thought you were just sharing important news.

Lots of people, like lawyers and groups that protect people's rights, said this wasn't fair. They said everyone has the right to speak their mind, like when you share your ideas in class. Mahmoud was eventually let go after a judge said he should be free. It shows that even when things seem unfair, people can fight for what's right!
