Key Facts
Meet the Party That Ruled!
The Communist Party of the Soviet Union, or CPSU for short, was like the boss of a giant country called the Soviet Union. It was the only party allowed to make decisions for over 70 years! Think of it like having only one team allowed to play in a huge sports league. This party had a big idea called Marxism-Leninism, which was all about sharing things equally and having the workers in charge.
Where Did This Big Party Come From?
This party didn't just appear overnight! It started way back in 1898 as a smaller group. Then, in 1903, it split into two teams. One team, called the Bolsheviks, was led by a very important person named Vladimir Lenin. This Bolshevik team was the one that took charge in 1917, like winning a big game and becoming the champions of the country. They then built the Soviet Union!
How Did They Make Decisions?
The CPSU had a special way of making rules called 'democratic centralism'. It meant everyone could talk about ideas, but once a decision was made, everyone had to agree and follow it. The biggest meetings happened every five years, where everyone would gather.
But for everyday stuff, smaller groups like the Politburo made the big calls. The leader of the party was also the leader of the whole country!
When Did Their Rule End?
After many years, things started to change. The country faced problems, and people wanted new ideas. A leader named Mikhail Gorbachev tried to make things better with new plans, but these changes actually made the party weaker. In 1991, the Soviet Union broke apart, and the Communist Party was finally stopped. It was like the end of a very long game!
