Splash! Meet the Loon!

Imagine a bird that looks super fancy in the summer with a shiny black head and a crisp white belly. That's the Common Loon! They are big birds, about as long as a grown-up is tall.

In the winter, they wear a more camouflaged brown coat to hide better. These birds love to swim and dive, spending most of their time in the water. They have special feet that help them paddle super fast and dive deep to catch their dinner.

Loon Homes and Family Life

Common Loons build their homes on the edges of lakes, making big nests out of plants. They are very loyal friends, often staying with the same partner for many years! A mom and dad loon work together to build their nest and take care of their eggs.

They usually have one or two eggs that hatch after about a month. The baby loons, called chicks, are amazing swimmers right from the start and can dive underwater when they are just a few days old!

What's for Dinner?

These birds are expert underwater hunters! Their favorite meals are fish, but they also enjoy yummy snacks like tiny water creatures and sometimes even plants. They catch their food while diving deep beneath the water's surface.

It's like a treasure hunt for food, but they are so fast and skilled, they usually find a tasty meal every time. They swallow most of their food whole, right there in the water!

Special Loon Superpowers!

Did you know that Common Loons are so important they are on Canadian money? The one-dollar coin is even called a 'loonie' after them! They are also the official bird of Minnesota in the United States. These birds are special because they need clean lakes to live and find food. When lakes are healthy, loons are healthy. They are a sign that nature is doing well in the places they call home.
