Columbia Island: A River Gem!

Imagine an island floating in the Potomac River, right in Washington, D.C.! That's Columbia Island. It's not a super big island, maybe about the size of a few football fields. It's a place where nature meets important buildings. The weather here is like most places in D.C. – warm summers and cool winters. It's a pretty spot to visit!

This island wasn't always here! A long, long time ago, it was part of a bigger island. But over many years, the river water washed some of it away, and it became its own little island. Then, people helped make it bigger by adding mud and dirt from the river bottom. It was like building with giant scoops of earth!

Columbia Island is home to a beautiful park called Lady Bird Johnson Park. There are also special memorials, like a grove of trees for President Lyndon B. Johnson and a memorial for Navy and Merchant Marine sailors. These are places to remember important people and events. It's also where the Arlington Memorial Bridge starts, connecting D.C. to Virginia!

The island and the park are looked after by the National Park Service. They are like the park rangers who make sure everything is clean and safe for visitors. They also help protect the trees and plants. It's part of a larger park system called the George Washington Memorial Parkway, which keeps many special places in the area looking great.
