Where Does the River Play?

Imagine a super long ribbon of water! The Potomac River is like that, stretching 405 miles. It starts way up in the mountains and flows all the way to the big Chesapeake Bay. It's like a giant slide for water! This river also acts as a border, separating different states and even the capital city, Washington, D.C., from other places. It's a busy watery road!

A River Full of Stories!

This river has seen so much history! Long ago, Native Americans lived by its banks. Later, important people like George Washington, who was the first president of the United States, lived right next to it at his home, Mount Vernon. During a big fight called the Civil War, the Potomac River was a very important line, like a fence, between two sides. Even a giant army was named after it!

Who Lives Near the Water?

Lots and lots of people call the area around the Potomac River home! More than 6 million people live in the watershed, which is like the whole neighborhood that the river waters. This means the river is super important for giving people water to drink and for helping plants and animals live. It's like the river is a giant water provider for a huge city!

Cool River Adventures!

The Potomac River isn't just for looking at; it's for doing fun things too! People can go boating and explore its waters. In one special spot called Mallows Bay, there's a whole underwater park filled with old shipwrecks! It's like a treasure hunt waiting to happen. The river is also a National Recreation Trail, meaning it's a special place for everyone to enjoy nature.
