Fun Fact
The Civil War was the deadliest war in American history, with more American soldiers dying than in all other American wars combined.

Two Big Teams: North vs. South!

Long, long ago, the United States was like two different families living in the same house. The North had lots of factories and big cities, and they didn't need enslaved people. The South had huge farms, especially for cotton, and they used enslaved people to do the hard work. These two teams had very different ideas about how things should be run, and it made them very unhappy with each other.

The Big Fight Over Freedom!

The biggest reason the North and South disagreed was about slavery. In the South, many people believed they had the right to own other people. In the North, more and more people thought slavery was very wrong and should end. This disagreement was like a giant storm cloud that kept getting bigger and bigger, making everyone angry and scared.

When States Said 'Bye Bye!'

Because they were so upset, some of the Southern states decided to leave the United States and make their own country. They called themselves the Confederate States of America. The President of the United States, Abraham Lincoln, said this wasn't allowed.

He believed the country should stay together. This is when the fighting really started, like when a game is stopped because players can't agree on the rules.

A Sad Time for America

The Civil War was a very sad and difficult time for America. Many people lost their homes and families. It lasted for four long years! In the end, the North won, and the country stayed together. Slavery was also ended everywhere in the United States, which was a huge change. It helped America start to heal and become one country again.
