A Soldier and a Leader

Before he was president, Jefferson Davis was a soldier in the U.S. Army. He even went to a special school for soldiers called West Point! He fought in a war called the Mexican-American War. Later, he became a politician, which means he worked in the government, helping to make rules and decisions for the country.

Leading a New Country

When some states decided to leave the United States to form their own country, the Confederacy, Jefferson Davis was chosen to be their president. He had to make big decisions about how the Confederacy would work and lead their army during the Civil War. It was a very challenging time for him and for everyone.

After the War

When the Civil War ended, the Confederacy lost. Jefferson Davis was captured and put in prison for a while. Some people blamed him for the war.
