Fort Sumter

Imagine a giant stone castle sitting in the water! That's Fort Sumter! It's a special kind of building called a sea fort, built on an island made by people. It was made to protect a city called Charleston a long, long time ago. Think of it like a big guardhouse for the harbor, keeping ships safe. It's made of strong bricks and was built to be super tough.

A long time ago, there was a war called the War of 1812. After that war, people realized they needed better ways to protect their coastlines from enemy ships. So, they decided to build Fort Sumter. It was like building a stronger fence around a backyard to keep it safe. This fort was meant to be a super strong defense, but it took a very long time to build!

Even though it wasn't finished, something very important happened at Fort Sumter. In 1861, soldiers from the South, called Confederates, fired cannons at the fort. This was the very first battle of the American Civil War! It was a huge moment that started a big fight across the country. The fort got pretty banged up during this battle.

After the war, people tried to fix Fort Sumter, but it was never quite finished like they first planned. Now, it's a special park that people can visit!
