Who Were the Confederates?

The Confederate States of America, or the Confederacy, was like a club of eleven states in the southern part of the United States. They decided to break away from the rest of the country in 1861. Think of it like a group of friends deciding to play a different game.

These states had a different way of life, especially when it came to farming and having enslaved people work for them. They were worried that the new president, Abraham Lincoln, would change things, so they left. They even wrote their own special rulebook, called a constitution, to be their own country.

When Did the Fighting Start?

The big fight, called the Civil War, began in April 1861. It started when soldiers from South Carolina, one of the Confederate states, fired on a U.S. Army fort called Fort Sumter.

After that, four more states decided to join the Confederacy. The Confederate army had its own leaders and even had a draft, which meant young men were chosen to fight. This war was a very sad time because Americans were fighting against Americans.

It lasted for four long years, with many battles and much sadness.

Why Did They Break Away?

The main reason these states wanted to leave was because they were very worried about slavery. Many people in the South owned enslaved people, and their farms, called plantations, depended on this. They believed that if Abraham Lincoln became president, he would try to stop slavery.

So, they decided to form their own country where they could keep things the way they were. This idea of keeping slavery was a huge reason for the war and for the country breaking apart.

The End of the Confederacy

After four years of fighting, the Confederate government started to fall apart. By the spring of 1865, most of the Confederate soldiers stopped fighting. The main leader of the Confederate army, Robert E.

Lee, surrendered his troops. This was a big moment that showed the Confederacy was over. The United States government won the war, and the eleven states eventually rejoined the country.

It was a very important and difficult time in American history.
