Key Facts
Meet the Five Big Friends!
Imagine New York City is like a giant pizza, and the boroughs are the five biggest slices! There's Manhattan, a long skinny island. Then there's Brooklyn and Queens, which are super big and on Long Island. Staten Island is like a quieter island neighbor. And The Bronx is up on the mainland, where the famous zoo is! Each borough is like its own special town inside the big city.
How Did They Get So Big?
A long, long time ago, New York City was much smaller, mostly just on Manhattan Island. But as more people came, the city needed more space! So, they started adding on land from other places. In 1898, they decided to officially join all these places together to make the New York City we know today. It was like a giant puzzle coming together!
What Makes Each Borough Special?
Each borough has its own unique personality! Manhattan is famous for its tall skyscrapers that reach for the clouds and busy streets. Brooklyn is known for its cool neighborhoods and yummy food.
Queens is super diverse, with people from all over the world living there. Staten Island is a bit more relaxed with parks and beaches. And The Bronx has amazing parks and is the birthplace of hip-hop music!
Who Runs the Boroughs?
Even though they are all part of New York City, each borough has its own way of being run. Think of it like having a class president for each grade in school. The mayor is like the principal of the whole school, making big decisions for everyone. But each borough also has its own leaders who help make sure things run smoothly in their part of the city.
