Key Facts
Where is This Sunny Spot?
Bornholm is a special Danish island way out in the Baltic Sea. It's like a little island friend to countries like Sweden, Germany, and Poland. Unlike most of Denmark, which is flat and green, Bornholm has rocky cliffs in the north that are super interesting. In the south, you'll find sandy beaches perfect for playing!
A Castle Fit for a King!
Long, long ago, Bornholm was a very important place. So important, in fact, that people fought over it! The biggest castle in all of northern Europe, called Hammershus, still stands there today. It’s a giant stone fortress that shows how powerful this little island used to be. It’s so big, it’s like a whole village made of stone!
Sunshine and Special Figs!
Bornholm is called the 'Sunshine Island' because it gets lots of sun, even late into the fall! The rocks soak up the sun's warmth and keep the island cozy. Because it's so sunny, they can even grow a special kind of fig tree there, called 'Bornholm's Diamond'. It's like a little piece of magic that grows on this rocky island.
Round Churches and Happy People!
Guess what? Bornholm has some of the most unique churches you'll ever see – they're round! These churches are super old and are a big part of Bornholm's story. Lots of people live on this island, and they love their sunny, rocky home. It’s a place with a lot of history and beautiful nature.
