What Was This Sneaky Sickness?

Smallpox was a super contagious sickness caused by a tiny, invisible germ called a virus. It made people's skin break out in itchy, painful bumps, like giant pimples all over their body. These bumps would fill with pus and then scab over, leaving scars.

It was really scary because it could make people very sick, and sometimes, sadly, it made them die. It spread easily from person to person, like a game of tag you didn't want to play.

Where Did Smallpox Come From?

Scientists think smallpox might have started a very, very long time ago, maybe even thousands of years ago, in Africa. It traveled around the world with people, like a very unwelcome traveler. For hundreds of years, it made people sick in many different countries.

It was a big problem for a long, long time, making families sad and communities worried. It was one of the worst sicknesses people had ever known.

Why Smallpox Was Such a Big Deal!

Smallpox was a really big deal because it was so hard to stop! It made millions and millions of people sick over history, more than any other sickness. It could make people blind or leave them with ugly scars. It was like a monster that kept coming back. But then, something amazing happened! Doctors and scientists worked super hard to find a way to stop it, and they did!

How We Beat the Pox Monster!

The super cool part is that smallpox is gone now! For real! Scientists invented a special shot called a vaccine. It's like a superhero shield for your body that teaches it how to fight off the smallpox germ. By giving this shot to lots and lots of people all over the world, they were able to stop the sickness completely. It was the first sickness ever to be totally wiped out by humans!
