Siege

A siege is like a super long game of tag, but with castles! One group of people, called attackers, try to capture a place, like a castle or a city, that's defended by another group, called defenders. The attackers don't usually try to break down the walls right away.

Instead, they surround the place and try to stop anyone from getting in or out. This means the people inside can't get more food or water, and they might get hungry and tired. It's a way to win without a big, messy fight right at the start!

People have been having sieges for thousands of years, even before castles were built! In ancient times, they would surround a town and wait. Sometimes, they would build big wooden towers that were taller than the walls to climb over.

Imagine a tower as tall as a 10-story building! They also used giant slingshots to throw big rocks. Over time, castles got stronger with thicker walls, and attackers had to invent new ways to get in, like digging tunnels or using powerful cannons that could blast holes in the walls.

Sieges are tricky because they can last for a very, very long time. Sometimes they go on for months, or even years! The people inside have to be very careful with their food and water.

The attackers have to stay outside and keep watch, which can be hard work too. It's like camping outside a friend's house for a really long time, waiting for them to let you in! Sieges were a big part of history because they were a common way to win battles and take over important places.

During a siege, attackers would sometimes use special machines. There were battering rams, which were like giant logs with metal tips used to smash gates. They also had catapults and trebuchets, which were like huge slingshots that could hurl huge stones or even burning things over the walls!

Defenders would try to stop them by pouring hot oil or dropping rocks from the walls. It was a dangerous game of cat and mouse, with lots of clever tricks on both sides!
