Archduke Franz Ferdinand of Austria

Archduke Franz Ferdinand was like a very important prince in a big country called Austria-Hungary. He was next in line to be the king! His dad was the brother of the actual king.

So, he was pretty special. He had a special lady he loved named Sophie, and they got married even though some people in his family weren't too happy about it at first. He also loved the army and was in charge of all the soldiers!

One sunny day, Franz Ferdinand and his wife Sophie went on a trip to a city called Sarajevo. It was supposed to be a happy visit. But, a young man named Gavrilo Princip was very angry. He did something terrible and shot both Franz Ferdinand and Sophie! This sad event was like a tiny spark that started a HUGE fire.

When Franz Ferdinand was shot, it made his country very, very angry. They blamed another country called Serbia. Because they were so upset, they declared war on Serbia. But Serbia had friends, and Franz Ferdinand's country had friends too! Soon, all their friends started fighting each other. This big fight became known as World War I, and it was one of the biggest wars ever!

Franz Ferdinand lived in a place called Austria-Hungary. Think of it like a giant kingdom with lots of different people and places inside it. Sarajevo, where the sad event happened, is a city in a part of that kingdom. This whole area had beautiful mountains and rivers, and people spoke different languages depending on where they lived. It was a very diverse place!
