Who Was This Kid?

Imagine a boy named Gavrilo Princip, who was born a long, long time ago in a place called Bosnia. He was just a student, like you might be in school! But Gavrilo had big ideas about his country. He wanted it to be free and united with other nearby lands. He was part of a secret group that dreamed of a different future for his home.

A Day That Shook the World!

One sunny day in 1914, a very important prince, Archduke Franz Ferdinand, was visiting the city of Sarajevo. Gavrilo Princip was there, and he had a plan. He fired a pistol, and sadly, the Archduke and his wife were hurt very badly. This one action was like a tiny spark that started a HUGE fire, leading to a giant war called World War I.

Why Did He Do It?

Gavrilo Princip felt that his country was being controlled by another big empire. He believed that by taking this drastic action, he could help his people become free and join together with other people who spoke similar languages. He was a nationalist, meaning he loved his country and wanted it to be strong and independent.

A Sad Ending and a Big Question

After his big action, Gavrilo was sent to prison for a very long time. The prison was a tough place, and he got very sick. He died before he could ever get out. Even today, people wonder if what he did was right or wrong. Some think he was a hero, while others think he was a troublemaker.
