Altiplano

The Altiplano is like a super-duper big, flat playground, but it's not made of grass! It's a huge, high plain in South America, way up in the mountains. It's so big, it's the largest high plain on Earth, except for one in Asia! Most of this giant playground is in a country called Bolivia, but parts of it stretch into Peru, Chile, and Argentina too. It's like a giant table set high in the sky!

This amazing high plain was formed over a very, very long time by giant mountains pushing up the land. Imagine squishing playdough – the mountains pushed the land up and made it flat and wide. It's been there for ages and ages, long before people even lived there. Ancient people even built cool places here, like the old Inca Empire!

Some parts of the Altiplano are a bit wet and have big lakes, like Lake Titicaca, which is the biggest lake in South America! Other parts are super dry and have sparkly salt flats, like a giant salt shaker spilled on the ground. It can get pretty cold up there because it's so high, like being on top of a very tall building. Some towns and even cities are built on this high plain!

The Altiplano is special because it's so unique and big! People live there and herd fluffy animals like llamas and vicuñas, which have super warm wool. They also dig up important stuff from the ground, like metals. It's a place with a long history and still a very important place for people today. It's a wonder of nature!
