The Day the Earth Shook and the Ocean Roared in Sulawesi

One day in September 2018, the ground in a place called Sulawesi, Indonesia, started to shake really, really hard! It was like a giant stomping its foot. This big shake was an earthquake, and it was so strong it could be felt far, far away, even in another country! Before the biggest shake, there were smaller ones, like little hiccups before a big sneeze.

After the earthquake, something even scarier happened. A huge wave, called a tsunami, rushed towards the land. This wave was as tall as a two-story house, maybe even taller! It swept away houses and buildings that were near the beach. It was like the ocean was angry and decided to play a very dangerous game.

The earth is made of giant puzzle pieces that are always moving very, very slowly. Sometimes, these pieces get stuck and then suddenly slip, causing an earthquake. In Sulawesi, the shaking was so strong that the ground itself started to act like liquid mud! It was like a swimming pool suddenly turning into thick soup, swallowing up buildings. This was a very rare and scary thing to see.

Sadly, the earthquake and the giant wave caused a lot of damage and hurt many people. It was one of the saddest earthquakes that happened anywhere in the world that year. People lost their homes and, sadly, some people lost their lives. It reminds us how powerful nature can be and why it's important to be prepared for these big events.
