Key Facts
The Earth's Big Shivers!
Have you ever felt a little shake? Well, earthquakes are like giant shivers from the Earth! They happen when big pieces of the Earth's rocky skin, called plates, suddenly slide past each other.
It's like when you slide your hands past each other really fast. This sudden movement releases a lot of energy, making the ground shake and tremble. Sometimes the shakes are so small you don't even notice them, but other times they can be super strong!
Where Do Earthquakes Come From?
Earthquakes usually start deep underground in a place called the focus. Think of it like the starting line for the shake. Right above it, on the surface, is the epicenter.
That's usually where the shaking is strongest! Most of these shakes happen because of something called geological faults. These are like giant cracks in the Earth's crust where the plates meet.
When these plates get stuck and then suddenly break free, BAM! An earthquake happens.
WOW! Earthquakes Can Be HUGE!
Some earthquakes are so powerful they can move things around a lot. The biggest earthquake ever recorded was in Chile, South America. It was so strong it measured 9.5 on a special scale! That's like a super-duper strong shake. These big shakes can cause buildings to wobble and even fall down. If an earthquake happens under the ocean, it can even make giant waves called tsunamis!
Feeling the Tremble!
When an earthquake happens, you might feel the ground shake, buildings might sway, and objects could fall off shelves. Sometimes, the ground can even act like jelly for a moment, which is called soil liquefaction. It's important for people to know what to do during an earthquake, like dropping to the ground, covering your head, and holding on.
Scientists study earthquakes to try and understand them better and help keep people safe.
