Key Facts
Meet the Ocean's Giant Waves!
Tsunamis are not like regular waves you see at the beach. Regular waves are made by wind pushing the water. Tsunamis are HUGE waves caused by something big happening under the ocean, like an earthquake or a volcano erupting.
When they are far out in the deep ocean, they might not look very tall, maybe only as tall as a tall person. But they travel super fast, like a race car zooming across the water!
Where Do These Big Waves Come From?
Most of the time, tsunamis start with a giant earthquake deep under the ocean floor. Imagine the ground shaking really hard! This shaking can push a lot of water upwards, like when you splash water in a bathtub.
This big push of water then starts to spread out in all directions, creating the tsunami. Sometimes, underwater volcanoes erupting or even big landslides falling into the ocean can also cause these massive waves.
Why Tsunamis Are So Powerful!
When a tsunami gets closer to land, it doesn't just get taller; it also slows down. This is when it can become a giant wall of water, sometimes as tall as a building! Because so much water is moving, tsunamis carry a lot of energy. They can push boats, flood towns, and change the shape of the land. It's like a super strong push from the ocean that can move almost anything in its path.
When the Ocean Roars!
One of the biggest tsunamis ever happened in 2004 in the Indian Ocean. It was caused by a massive earthquake. This tsunami traveled very far and sadly caused a lot of damage and hurt many people.
Scientists now watch the oceans very carefully for signs of earthquakes that could cause tsunamis, so they can warn people to get to safety. Knowing about tsunamis helps us stay safe when the ocean gets angry.
