Key Facts
Lisbon Gets a Big Shake!
Once upon a time, on a special day called All Saints Day in 1755, the city of Lisbon in Portugal was having a normal, happy day. But suddenly, the ground started to rumble and shake like a giant was stomping! Buildings, some as tall as a 10-story building, began to fall down.
It was a super big earthquake, one of the biggest ever recorded! The shaking lasted for a long time, making everyone feel very scared.
A Giant Wave Crashes In!
After the shaking stopped, something even scarier happened. A HUGE wave, much bigger than a playground slide, rushed from the ocean and crashed into the city! This giant wave, called a tsunami, swept away anything in its path. Boats that were far out at sea were tossed onto land, and people who were near the water had to run very fast to escape. It was like the ocean was angry!
Firefighters to the Rescue!
After the earthquake and the giant wave, fires started all over the city. It was like a giant campfire that got out of control. For many days, the fires burned, making the city smoky and dangerous. People had to work together to put out the fires and help each other. Even though it was a very sad and scary time, the people of Lisbon were very brave and started to rebuild their homes.
Learning from the Big Shake
This big earthquake taught people a lot. Scientists learned more about how the Earth's giant plates move and cause earthquakes. People also learned how to build stronger buildings that could better survive shaking. The city of Lisbon was rebuilt, and it's still a beautiful place today, remembering the day the Earth roared and how brave its people were.
