Azores
Key Facts
Meet the Nine Island Friends!
The Azores are a group of nine islands way out in the big Atlantic Ocean. They are like a scattered necklace, with some islands close together and others far apart. Think of them as Portugal's faraway cousins!
These islands are special because they are the very westernmost part of Portugal, meaning they are the furthest west you can go in that country. They are also part of a special club called the European Union.
Born from Fire and Water!
Guess what? All these islands were made by volcanoes! They are like giant underwater mountains that grew so tall they poked out of the sea.
Some volcanoes are still sleeping, but others haven't erupted for a very, very long time. The tallest mountain in all of Portugal, called Mount Pico, is actually a volcano on one of these islands. If you measured from the very bottom of the ocean, it would be one of the tallest mountains on Earth!
A Cozy, Rainy Place to Live
Even though the Azores are quite far north, the weather is super mild, like a comfy sweater all year round. This is thanks to a warm ocean current called the Gulf Stream. It's usually not too hot or too cold, but it can be quite wet and cloudy, like a cozy day indoors. This special weather helps lots of yummy food grow, like cheese and other dairy treats!
Islands Full of Surprises!
People have lived on these islands for hundreds of years, but they settled them bit by bit. Because they are so spread out, each island has its own special way of talking, cooking, and celebrating. The main jobs here are farming, raising animals, fishing, and welcoming visitors. Sometimes, airplanes flying between Europe and North America even stop here to refuel, like a pit stop for planes!
