Key Facts
Meet the Horseback Heroes!
Cavalry means soldiers who fight from the back of a horse. Think of them as the speedy, powerful surprise team of an army! Horses are much faster than people running, and when a whole group of them charged, it was like a thunderous wave. They could surprise enemies, chase them down, or protect their own soldiers. It was an amazing sight to see them gallop across the battlefield!
Where Did These Horse Riders Come From?
People have been using horses for fighting for thousands of years, even before written history! Early armies discovered that a person on a horse was much stronger and faster. Over time, they learned to train horses for war and developed special armor and weapons for these riders.
Different armies around the world, like the ancient Greeks and Romans, and later knights in shining armor, all used cavalry in their own special ways.
Why Were They So Important?
Cavalry was like the fast-attack vehicles of ancient armies. They could scout ahead to see where the enemy was, or quickly deliver messages. When they charged, their speed and the thundering hooves could scare and overwhelm opponents.
They were also great at chasing down enemies who were trying to run away. Armies without good cavalry were often at a big disadvantage because they couldn't move as quickly or strike with as much force.
Amazing Horsepower in Action!
One cool thing about cavalry is how they used their horses' power. They would often charge in a wedge shape, like a pointy arrow, to break through enemy lines. Sometimes they would even pretend to run away, and then turn around suddenly to attack the surprised enemy!
The horses were trained to be brave and not get scared by loud noises or fighting. It took a lot of skill and practice to be a good cavalry soldier.
