Key Facts
Meet the Mountain Detective!
William Morris Davis was a super smart scientist who loved to figure out how the Earth's surface, like mountains and valleys, got to be the way they are. He was born a long, long time ago in a city called Philadelphia. He studied at a famous school called Harvard, where he learned all about rocks and the land. He even went on exciting trips to places like the Rocky Mountains to see them up close!
What Did He Discover?
William Morris Davis had a big idea called the 'cycle of erosion.' It's like how a playground slide gets worn down over time. He said that mountains don't stay the same forever. They start out tall and pointy, but over millions of years, rain and wind wear them down, making them shorter and rounder, like old, smooth pebbles.
He was like a detective, looking at mountains and figuring out their whole life story!
Adventures in the Wild!
One of the coolest things William Morris Davis did was go on expeditions to explore new places. He traveled to the Rocky Mountains when they were still a bit of a mystery! People wondered how tall the highest peaks were. He and his team measured them and found mountains that were over 14,000 feet tall. That's taller than a whole bunch of giraffes stacked on top of each other!
Why He's a Geography Star!
Because William Morris Davis studied the Earth's surface so much, people call him the 'father of American geography.' He helped us understand how landscapes change. He taught us that the world is always changing, even if it's very, very slowly. His ideas are still important today for scientists who study our planet and how it works.
