White Sea–Baltic Canal

The White Sea–Baltic Canal is like a giant, man-made river that connects two huge bodies of water: the White Sea and the Baltic Sea. It's super long, about as long as 100 football fields laid end to end! Boats use it to travel between these seas without having to go all the way around a big landmass. It's a really important shortcut for ships carrying goods.

Building this canal was a HUGE job! It took many years and lots of hard work. Imagine digging a giant ditch through forests and over hills! Workers had to dig through tough ground and build locks, which are like water elevators to help boats go up and down hills. It was a massive project, and many people worked very hard to make it happen.

The canal is in a place called Russia, which is a very, very big country. The land around the canal is often covered in forests, and in the winter, it gets very cold and snowy. The water in the canal can even freeze over! It's a wild and beautiful place, with lots of trees and sometimes even wild animals.

This canal is like a secret passage for boats! Before it was built, ships had to sail a much, much longer way to get from the White Sea to the Baltic Sea. Now, they can take this shortcut, which saves a lot of time and fuel. This helps people get things they need from one place to another faster.
