Key Facts
What's All This Water About?
Imagine all the water on our planet Earth! Most of it is salty ocean water, like a giant bathtub. Only a tiny bit is fresh water, the kind we can drink.
A lot of that fresh water is frozen solid in huge ice cubes called glaciers, mostly at the North and South Poles. The rest is hiding underground or flowing in rivers and lakes. Water is super important for everything alive, from tiny bugs to giant whales, and of course, for us too!
Where Did the Water Come From?
Water has been on Earth for a super, super long time, even before dinosaurs! It's been recycled over and over. When it rains, that water might have been in a cloud last week or in the ocean a long time ago. Some water is so old it was around when the Earth was just forming. Itβs like a never-ending water game of tag, always moving from the oceans to the sky, to the land, and back again.
Why We Need Our Water Friends!
Water is like a superhero for our planet! We need it to drink so we don't get thirsty. Plants need it to grow tall and strong, which gives us yummy fruits and vegetables. Farmers use it to water their crops. Even factories need water to make things we use every day. Without water, life on Earth would be very, very different and much harder.
Water's Amazing Journey
Water is always on the move! It can be a liquid, like in your water bottle, a solid, like ice in your freezer, or a gas, like steam from a hot shower. This is called the water cycle. Water evaporates from lakes and oceans, turns into clouds, and then falls back down as rain or snow. This helps keep our water fresh and available for everyone.
