Key Facts
Meet the Independent Land!
Once upon a time, a place called the Vermont Republic decided it wanted to be its own country! It wasn't part of the United States or still connected to England. It was a brand-new land, like a brand-new playground where the kids make all the rules. Delegates from 28 towns got together and said, 'We're independent!' This happened way back in 1777, and it lasted for 14 whole years!
Where Did They Come From?
Before it was its own country, this land was claimed by places like New York and New Hampshire, and even by England. But the people living there wanted to make their own decisions. So, they declared independence from those places. It was a bit like saying, 'This is our fort, and we're in charge now!' They wanted to be free to create their own laws and live their own way.
No Slaves Allowed!
One super cool thing about the Vermont Republic was that they said no to slavery for grown-ups. This was a really big deal back then! While they still had some rules about younger people, it was one of the first places to say that owning another person was wrong. It showed they were thinking about fairness and making things better for everyone.
Joining the Big Team!
After being independent for 14 years, the Vermont Republic decided it was time to join the United States. They made a deal and became the 14th state! All the rules and laws they made when they were their own country mostly stayed the same. It was like joining a big club, but they got to bring all their cool ideas with them.
