The Upper Cretaceous: When Dinosaurs Ruled!

The Upper Cretaceous was the very last part of the Age of Dinosaurs, like the grand finale of a super long show! It happened a super, super long time ago, from about 100 million to 66 million years ago. This was when some of the most famous dinosaurs, like the mighty Tyrannosaurus Rex and the horned Triceratops, were stomping around.

It was a time of big changes for our planet, with continents moving and sea levels rising.

Picture a world with warm weather and lots of green plants! Many parts of the world were covered in shallow seas, like giant puddles. Forests were filled with tall trees, ferns, and flowers that looked a bit different from the ones we see today. It was a busy time for life, with lots of new creatures evolving and filling up all the spaces, from tiny bugs to enormous reptiles.

The Upper Cretaceous ended with a HUGE event – a giant asteroid crashed into Earth! This caused massive changes, like giant tsunamis and dust clouds that blocked the sun. Sadly, many dinosaurs couldn't survive this big disaster. But, it also made space for new kinds of animals to appear, like the first tiny mammals and birds that would eventually lead to the animals we know today!

Learning about the Upper Cretaceous helps us understand how our planet and all the amazing life on it have changed over millions of years. It’s like looking at old family photos, but for Earth! We find fossils from this time that tell us stories about these ancient creatures and their world. It shows us that life on Earth is always changing and adapting, which is pretty amazing!
