Where is Afghanistan?

Afghanistan is a country way over in Asia, a continent far from North America. It has tall, rocky mountains, like giant playgrounds made of stone, and dry, dusty places. The weather can be super hot in the summer and very cold in the winter. It's a place with amazing natural beauty, but also a tough landscape that makes it tricky to travel around.

A Big Change Happens!

In 2001, something very sad happened in the United States called the September 11 attacks. After this, the U.S. and its friends decided to go to Afghanistan. They wanted to stop bad guys called al-Qaeda and the Taliban, who were in charge there. The goal was to make sure Afghanistan wouldn't be a safe place for people who wanted to do harm.

Who Lived There?

Many different groups of people live in Afghanistan, and they speak different languages. For a long time, a group called the Taliban was in charge, and they had control over most of the country. But there were also other groups, like the Northern Alliance, who didn't agree with the Taliban. The invasion brought big changes to how people lived.

What Happened Next?

The invasion started in October 2001 and was quite fast! The U.S. and its allies worked with the Northern Alliance to take back control. They captured the capital city, Kabul, and removed the Taliban from power. This was the beginning of a very long time where many countries tried to help Afghanistan rebuild and become safe.
