Who Are the Taliban?

The Taliban is a group of people in a country called Afghanistan. They believe in a very strict way of following their religion. For a few years, from 1996 to 2001, they were in charge of most of Afghanistan. Then, after a big change, they came back and are in charge again now. They have made rules that have changed how people live, especially for girls and women.

Where Did They Come From?

The Taliban started in Afghanistan around 1994. Many of the first members were students who went to religious schools. They were mostly from a group of people called Pashtuns. They became strong during a time when Afghanistan was having a civil war. They wanted to bring their own kind of order to the country, and many people followed them.

What Happened When They Ruled?

When the Taliban ruled Afghanistan before, they made very strict rules. They banned music and television. Girls and women were not allowed to go to school or work. They also destroyed old statues and buildings that were important to Afghanistan's history. These actions made many people around the world very unhappy.

Coming Back to Power

After being removed from power in 2001, the Taliban fought for many years to get back in charge. In 2021, they succeeded and took control of Afghanistan again. Since returning, they have brought back many of the same strict rules, especially about women's rights to education and work. The world is watching to see what happens next.
