Key Facts
Why Did America Split Up?
Once upon a time, the United States was like one big family. But after a new president, Abraham Lincoln, was elected in 1860, some states decided they wanted to go their own way. They formed a new group called the Confederacy.
The rest of the states, called the Union, wanted to stay together as one country. It was like a big disagreement at playtime, and the Union wanted everyone to share the playground!
Who Was On The Union Team?
The Union team was made up of states that stayed loyal to the main government. Most of these states were in the North, but some were in the South too! These states had lots of factories that could make things like cannons and uniforms.
They also had many brave people who became soldiers to fight for the country to stay together. Think of it like having lots of helpers to build a giant LEGO castle!
What Did The Union Do?
The Union's main job was to stop the Confederacy from breaking away. They had to fight a big war to keep the country united. The factories in the North made tons of supplies, and people sent food and money to help the soldiers. Even though it was a tough time, the Union government worked hard to make sure soldiers and their families were cared for. They were like super-organizers!
Did The Union Win?
Yes! After a long and difficult war, the Union team won. This meant that the United States stayed one country. President Lincoln was very happy because he believed that the country should always be together. The Union's victory was super important because it kept America united and helped lead to big changes, like ending slavery.
