The Treaty of Ghent

Once upon a time, the United States and the United Kingdom were having a big disagreement, which led to a war called the War of 1812. To stop the fighting, brave people from both sides met in a city called Ghent, which is now in Belgium. They wrote down a special agreement, like a promise, to be friends again.

This promise was called the Treaty of Ghent. It was signed on Christmas Eve, December 24, 1814. It was like saying, 'No more fighting, let's be pals!'

After the treaty was signed, it had to travel all the way across the big ocean to reach America. It took a whole month for the news to arrive! While everyone waited, a big battle happened in New Orleans, and the American side won!

Finally, the President of the United States, James Madison, got the treaty and said 'Hooray!' He and the British agreed to the peace. This treaty helped make sure there were no more big wars between the two countries for a very, very long time.
