Ghent: A City by the Rivers!

Ghent is a special city in Belgium, a country in Europe. It started a long, long time ago right where two rivers, the Scheldt and the Leie, decided to be friends. Think of it like two streams joining up to make a bigger river! This made it a great spot for people to build their homes and start a town. It's now the biggest city in a part of Belgium called East Flanders.

Once upon a time, about 700 years ago, Ghent was HUGE and super rich! It was one of the biggest cities in all of northern Europe, with around 50,000 people. That’s like having a whole town of friends! But then, things changed, and it became a little less busy. This was actually good because it meant lots of the old, beautiful buildings stayed just as they were, like a time capsule!

Ghent is a place where people love to have fun! Every year, there's a giant festival called the Ghent Festival. It lasts for ten whole days, and it's like the biggest party ever! About 1 to 1.5 million people come to join the fun. That’s more people than can fit in a giant stadium many times over! They have music, food, and lots of exciting things to do.

Ghent is a busy city with lots going on. It's a place where people go to learn, so it's a university city. It's also a port city, which means big boats can come and go, bringing and taking things. People work in different jobs, like studying, making things, and helping visitors explore the amazing old buildings. It’s a place that’s both old and new!
