Tomb of Kha and Merit
Key Facts
Meet Kha and Merit!
Imagine a time over 3,000 years ago in ancient Egypt! That's when Kha, a super important builder, and his wife Merit lived. Kha was like a boss for the workers who dug out amazing tombs for the pharaohs, the kings and queens of Egypt.
He was so good at his job that he got to help build tombs for three different pharaohs! He and Merit had a family and lived in a special village for the tomb builders.
A Secret Hiding Place!
Kha and Merit's tomb was like a secret hideout! It was built right into the side of a cliff. This was super clever because when rocks and dirt fell down the cliff, they covered the entrance. This kept the tomb safe from people who might want to steal things. For a very, very long time, no one knew it was there. It was like a treasure chest waiting to be found!
A Surprise Discovery!
In 1906, explorers found the tomb! When they opened it, they found over 400 amazing things. There were beds, chairs, boxes full of clothes and tools, and even food like bread and fruit! The most special things were the two big wooden boxes, called sarcophagi, holding Kha and Merit's mummies. They also found a special book for Kha to help him in the afterlife. Wow!
Treasures in Italy!
Almost everything found in the tomb was carefully sent all the way to Italy. Now, people can see these incredible treasures in a museum in a city called Turin. They have a whole room just for Kha and Merit's things! It's like a giant display showing us what life was like for this ancient Egyptian family and how they prepared for the afterlife.
