Meet Theodor, the Cell Explorer!

Imagine a super detective, but instead of solving mysteries with clues, Theodor Schwann solved them by looking at tiny things called cells. He was a doctor and scientist from Germany who lived a long, long time ago, from 1810 to 1882. Theodor loved to figure out how living things worked, from the smallest bug to the biggest animal.

He was really good at noticing things others missed, which helped him make amazing discoveries!

Cells: The LEGOs of Life!

Theodor Schwann realized that all living things, like you, your pet, and even a tall tree, are made of tiny little pieces called cells. Think of cells like LEGO bricks! You can build anything with LEGOs, and cells are the building blocks for all life.

Before Theodor, people thought only plants were made of cells. He was the first to say that animals, too, are built from these amazing little units. It was a HUGE idea!

Schwann Cells: Speedy Messengers!

Did you know Theodor discovered special cells named after him? They are called Schwann cells! These cells are like the helpers for your nerves, which are like tiny wires that send messages all over your body.

Schwann cells wrap around these nerves, kind of like putting a cozy blanket on them. This helps the messages zoom super fast, so you can run, jump, and even feel a tickle! Without them, your nerves would be much slower.

Yeast and Your Tummy!

Theodor also studied something called yeast, which is a tiny living thing used to make bread rise and to make yummy drinks. He discovered that yeast was alive and not just some random powder! He also found something called pepsin, which is a special helper in your tummy that breaks down your food so your body can use it.

Theodor even came up with the word 'metabolism' to describe all the amazing ways your body uses energy.
