The Holocaust
Key Facts
What Was the Holocaust?
The Holocaust was a terrible time in history, from 1933 to 1945, when a cruel leader named Adolf Hitler and his followers, called Nazis, decided to hurt and kill millions of Jewish people. They also targeted other groups they didn't like, like people with disabilities, Roma people, and people who disagreed with them. It was like a really, really bad bully taking over and hurting everyone who was different.
Why Did This Happen?
Hitler and the Nazis believed that some people were better than others. They spread lies and hate, making people afraid of Jewish people and blaming them for problems. They created laws that took away Jewish people's rights, like stopping them from going to school or owning businesses. It was a slow, scary process that started with mean words and ended with terrible violence.
The Darkest Days
During the Holocaust, Jewish people were forced out of their homes and sent to crowded places called ghettos. Later, they were put on trains and sent to horrible camps called concentration camps and death camps. In these camps, they were forced to do hard labor, starved, and many were killed in gas chambers. It was a place of immense suffering and loss.
Remembering So We Don't Forget
After the war ended, the world learned about the terrible things that happened. It's super important to remember the Holocaust so we can learn from it. We need to make sure that no one is ever treated so badly again just because they are different. Learning about it helps us be kind and stand up for others.
