What Was the Night of Broken Glass?

Kristallnacht, which means 'Crystal Night' in German, happened a long, long time ago, on November 9th and 10th, 1938. It wasn't a happy night at all. It was a terrible night when people who hated Jewish people, with help from some grown-ups and even some young people, broke into Jewish homes, shops, and special places called synagogues.

They smashed windows, which is why it's called the 'Night of Broken Glass'. It was a very scary and sad time for many families.

Why Did This Happen?

A sad event happened just before Kristallnacht. A young Jewish boy named Herschel Grynszpan was very upset about what was happening to his family and Jewish people. He shot a German official named Ernst vom Rath.

This made some people very angry, and they used it as an excuse to hurt Jewish people all over Germany. It was like a bully blaming someone else for their own bad actions. The leaders at the time didn't stop the bad things from happening.

So Much Broken Glass!

Imagine if all the windows in your school and all the shops on your street were smashed! That's what happened. Over 1,400 synagogues, which are like churches for Jewish people, were destroyed.

More than 7,000 Jewish businesses were broken into and ruined. It was a huge mess. The broken glass from all the windows made the streets look like they were covered in crystals, which is how the name 'Crystal Night' came about.

A Very Sad Beginning

Kristallnacht was a very important and sad event because it showed how much hate some people had. After this night, things got even worse for Jewish people. Many Jewish men were arrested and sent to places called concentration camps.

This terrible night was a sign of more bad things to come, leading to a very dark time in history called the Holocaust, where millions of Jewish people were hurt and killed. It's important to remember so we can learn from it.
