The Great Sphinx

Way, way out in the desert of Egypt, near the famous pyramids, sits a super-duper old statue called the Great Sphinx. It's like a giant stone creature! It has the body of a lion and the head of a person. It's so big, it's longer than a school bus and taller than a giraffe! It's been sitting there for thousands of years, watching over the desert.

Nobody knows for sure who built the Sphinx, but most people think it was built a super long time ago, around 4,500 years ago! That's even older than your grandparents' grandparents! It's made out of a special kind of rock called limestone. Imagine carving a whole giant statue out of a big rock! It's a mystery how they moved all those heavy stones back then.

The Sphinx is special because it's one of the biggest and oldest statues in the whole world! It's a mystery why it was built, but maybe it was to guard the pharaohs' tombs, like a protector. It's seen so many things happen over the years, like sandstorms and changing weather. It's like a silent watcher of history!

For a long time, the Sphinx was buried almost all the way up to its head in sand! It was like it was playing hide-and-seek with the desert. People had to dig it out so we could see its amazing face again. It's still a little bit of a mystery what it looked like originally, but it's still super cool!
