Africa's Skinniest Country!
Imagine a country so skinny it looks like a long, thin ribbon! That's The Gambia, the smallest country on the mainland of Africa. It's like a playful puppy surrounded by a much bigger dog, Senegal, except for a little bit of beach where it meets the big blue Atlantic Ocean. The whole country is wrapped around the amazing Gambia River, which flows right through the middle like a watery highway!
A River Runs Through It!
The Gambia River is super important! It's so big that it shapes the entire country, making it long and narrow. Think of it like a giant slide that the country is built around. This river is home to lots of fish and is a busy path for boats. The country is like a long sandwich with the river as the yummy filling, and Senegal as the bread on both sides!
Long Ago Adventures!
People have lived in The Gambia for a very, very long time. Long ago, traders from far away, like Arab merchants, traveled there to swap goods. Later, brave explorers from Portugal arrived, and then the British built a colony. After many years, in 1965, The Gambia became its own independent country, free to make its own choices!
Sunshine, Sand, and Smiles!
Most people in The Gambia love farming and fishing. They grow yummy foods and catch tasty fish from the river and ocean. Lots of visitors also come to enjoy the sunny beaches and warm weather, which helps the country. The capital city is a special island called Banjul, and people there speak English, which they learned when the British were in charge.
